Stupid Question

Help me out here. Did he

name himself after

?

I ask because Rami thinks it's plausible that his real name is Olavi Uusivirta. Personally, I figure it's got to be an homage.

PS. As a singer, Olavi (vanha)Virta can be as fifties-ish and maudlin as he wants to be, but his voice is seriously incredible.

PPS. Videos of "Täysikuu" on Youtube are blocked by EMI. In Finland. There is something profoundly unjust about that.

  1. This page claims the similarity of their surnames is just coincidental:

Rami seems to be right here. I guess some people want to see it as an homage while it actually isn´t.
    One thing´s for sure though:
    "Täysikuu" is a beautiful song!
I have a Finnish tango compilation where it´s included.

  2. Thanks! That's just the sort of thing I was looking for. I'm kind of glad it's most likely not an homage, since it would actually be a pretty presumptuous one. And "Täysikuu" is just lovely. :)

  3. Hikipedia is the finnish uncyclopedia.
    I would not trust it.

  4. Thanks for that. I'm in the unfortunate position of having to take most things written in Finnish at face value; let's hope my comprehension gets a little more nuanced.

  5. @Anomuumi:
Didn´t look trustworthy to me, it was just the only source that dealed with Elena´s question. Do you have anything better to offer?

    @Elena:
Maybe you have to ask Uusivirta himself if you wanna know for sure. We just can´t trust the evil internet ;-)

It is his real name but I do not think that he is related to Olavi Virta, the press would have made a point about it.

  7. Well, I'm satisfied with the evidence presented.

And I maintain the opinion that Vanha Virta > Uusivirta. :)
