Dear Finland

Soon now!
Today, it feels like spring here in LPR. It's not especially warm, (though at 5 degrees C, it's much warmer than it was yesterday) but spring is fighting to gain a foothold, and you can feel it. The air smells like mud and melting snow. You can hear the meltage rushing though the storm drains and dripping from rooftops. The wind isn't quite so biting when it brushes your face. It's only a matter of time before winter's "back is broken."

I stocked up on food today because stores will be closed tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday. As I walked home with two bags full of groceries, I thought of this cover of "Dear Prudence" by Siouxsie and the Banshees:

I think "Dear Prudence" is one of the Beatles' weaker songs, but there's something about the Banshees' version that accurately encapsulates what it is to feel everything around you thaw.

Looks like we've got some (slushy, no doubt) snow coming tomorrow. But Spring will break Winter's back soon enough.

Haista vittu, Talvi!

  1. HA HA HA HA HA...I understand your sentiment about winter. The longer I stay here, the more I understand why people opt to go to warmer places in their spring break. :-D

I've never heard the song sung by Banshees. THANKS for introducing it to me. It's quite nice! :-D

  2. I secretly kind of like the tease of a chilly spring. It forces you to appreciate any increase in temperature that comes your way. Or, at least, that's what I tell myself!

  3. I love that song. I am old enough to actually remember when it came out...

PS: It's been a bit chilly here in the UK: only +12C today. But flowers everywhere look really good! ;-)

    1. I love it too. It really transforms a mediocre song into something beautiful and interesting.

      Ah, only +12. What I wouldn't give for only +12. ;)

  4. On Easter Sunday I talked to my parents in Brisbane, Australia. They were unkind enough to mention that the temperature there had dropped to a freezing 16 degrees the previous evening. sigh!! But here in Helsinki, the snow is just about all gone now, and I heard that we may even get +8 or +10 before the week is out. BRING IT ON!

  5. Haha I totally laughed my ass of with the last three words coming out of the blue :D Anyway, I'm pretty happy to spend my spring here in the south: at the coldest it's around 20 degrees C ^^ I'm so starting to appreciate Sevilla.. and so not missing Finland! :D

But soon it's gonna get warmer there as well and then it's gonna be nice to come back home! Midsummer fest in Finland... I'm so waiting for it! Summer in Finland.. so short, but so intense! :)
